a list of a few of my favourite reads for my dear musketeer sylv (as promised).
who unfortunately has had to 'quit' work and rest for a few months 'til the little one arrives.
so darling, please listen to the doc, relax and enjoy!
1. The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards
"…story of parallel lives, familial secrets, and the redemptive power of love."
my pick for a can't-put-down read!
2. Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
"…tells with seamless authenticity and exquisite lyricism the true confessions of one of Japan's most celebrated geisha."
the movie doesn't do it justice.
one of those stories that's much better to read than to watch.
3. Gypsy by Lesley Pearse
a story set back in early america during the time of the Klondike gold rush.
i loved it, but then again I love historical novels.
4. High Fidelity by Nick Hornby
this is what I'm reading at the moment.
it's a real laugh.
the few times I've caught the train to work lately i've been reading it and it's hard to suppress the giggles. (got a very weird look from some guy who obviously thought I was a bit nuts.)
supposedly there's a movie, but I haven't seen it.
5. Matilda by Roald Dahl
had to be my favourite book growing up.
sylv, you can read it out loud to the baby (SHE'd enjoy it).
6. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss
what can I say – the BEST book ever ;-)
of all of these, memoirs of a geisha is my favourite - it is such a powerful story, and the imagery is just breathtaking. my favourite line - 'my mind is like a busy intersection with too much traffic in it'.
ReplyDeleteLove your choices Mandy! I am surprised you don't have any Cathy Kelly's in there :) Dont worry, i'll recommend those to her!!
